The 2011 Toyota Highlander: New Features for the New Year - Greensburg Toyota
Besides some minor modifications, the Toyota Highlander has remained virtually unchanged for the last three years. Happily, the 2011 Toyota Highlander has received some welcome design changes. The all wheel drive Toyota SUV gas-electric crossover retains three rows of seating while finding the middle ground between an SUV and a minivan.
Styling
The body styling remains similar to the 2010, however the front and back received an aggressive new grill, trim and taillight lenses. Wheels have received a fresh update and look for new interior fabrics. The new Toyota SUV cleverly borrows from the lightweight 2011 Camry’s unibody platform, distinguishing it from the competition, which generally use heavyweight truck frames.
Look for a Base, Sport and High-end luxury models of the 2011 Highlander. The luxury and base model will offer the hybrid gas-electric feature. Base models feature 17 inch alloy wheels while the sport and luxury models feature 19 inch alloy wheels.
Power
The 2011 Toyota Highlander SUV is available with four and V-6 gas engines and electric motor. Look for a 2.7 liter 187 horsepower four cylinder model with a trim upgrade. All wheel drive is available on all models.
The V-6 gasoline engine offers up a 3.5 liter 270 horsepower powerhouse with the possibility of an updated advanced 6 speed automatic transmission. This transmission is currently available on the four cylinder model and increases fuel economy and handling.
The 2011 Highlander Hybrid retains its 270 horsepower engine with the addition of twin electric motors. There are separate motors for the front and rear wheels, creating all wheel drive (AWD not intended for off-road). The Hybrid model features a continuously variable transmission using rheostat power delivery instead of various gear ratios. The electric motor is a self charging lead acid battery pack capable of running in three modes. The first mode runs totally on electric power at low speed. The second mode runs on the gas engine at high speeds and the third mode runs on gas and electric at any speed. Engine configuration is determined by an onboard computer monitoring fuel economy and power. A traction antiskid system and antilock brakes are standard on all models giving additional control in an urgent situation.
The V- 6 Sport model includes tuned suspension and is capable of towing 3,500 pounds with an optional trailer package.
Features and Options
All models include curtain side airbags for all rows and a driver’s side knee airbag. The 2011 Toyota Highlander SUV leads the pack with 42 cubic feet of cargo space with third row seating folded down and 95 cubic feet with the second and third row seating folded down. Windows, mirrors and locks are all power assisted and a power lift gate is optional on some models. A sophisticated DVD entertainment system with JBL speakers and satellite radio is available as is Bluetooth connectivity and an MP3 plug.
