Toyota Matrix 2011

Toyota Matrix Gets the Job Done

Restyled slightly in model year 2011, the Toyota Matrix gains a little more power and a touch sportier design. The small hatchback, based on the venerable Toyota Corolla sedan, is a great choice for consumers looking for more space than a compact car without sacrificing fuel economy. The Matrix boasts plenty of head room, and with fold-down rear seats, provides a cargo capacity (with all seats in place) of nearly 20 cubic feet. That's five feet more than the Ford Fiesta and nine more than the Nissan Cube.

Safety Features of the Matrix

Receiving high scores by the IIHS, one of the auto industries' top safety organizations, the 2011 Matrix provides peace of mind for those concerned about a small vehicle protecting them in case of an accident. The base Matrix is loaded with safety features including side curtain airbags, stability control, traction control, and four-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS). The sportier and pricier "S" model adds All-Wheel Drive for even better traction capabilities.

Engine and Economy

Two of the more reliable engines in the auto industry are offered in the 2011 Matrix models. Sharing the Corolla's 1.8 L engine, the Matrix base model delivers 132 horsepower while managing up to 32 mpg on the highway. Adding the Camry's engine as a choice for this year's S model puts some spunk into the Matrix. At 2.4 L and 158 horsepower, this makes the Matrix is superior to most of the competition. With the additional power, the fuel economy dips ever so slightly to a still-economic 28 mpg on the highway.

Interior Comfort

The Matrix has plenty of tech options for drivers. It offers optional Bluetooth connectivity, iPod input and satellite radio. A nice feature is the 115 volt power outlet in the dash that allows passengers to connect a laptop or video game console. The usual creature comforts such as CD player, sunroof, steering wheel audio controls, cruise control and one-touch power windows are also available on the Matrix. The controls on the steering wheel and dash are user-friendly and well-organized.
