Mr. Riz Rizvi, General Manager of Toyota of Greensburg awarded $7,000 check to the nonprofit CANDLE, Inc. that oversees the Reality Tour parent/child drug prevention program. The funds will allow all Hempfield School District middle school families to attend the program at no cost and be eligible for $500 in gift card drawings. In addition CANDLE will award $1500 of the funds received to the Hempfield middle school with the best Reality Tour attendance at the end of the school year.
Mr. Riz Rizvi General Manager of Toyota of Greensburg moved to the area a year ago from Connecticut. He was present at Hempfield’s Harrold Middle School Orientation in May and heard Principal Jason Lochner’s appeal to parents to take their child to Reality Tour. In 2017 Westmoreland County experienced a record 193 overdose deaths. Mr. Rizvi explains his reason for stepping forward to support prevention for families in a simple statement, “It’s the right thing to do.”
Hempfield School District has partnered with Reality Tour since 2010 with over 3,000 parents and students attending the evening program held at the courthouse monthly. The program is only possible because of dedicated
volunteers – some have served for over a decade. Organizations in Mt. Pleasant, Belle Vernon, Murrysville, Norwin & Latrobe also replicate Reality Tour for a record total of six locations for the program in Westmoreland County. Reality Tour started in Butler County in 2003 and it is the only program if its kind that educates parent and child together before there is a problem with drugs or alcohol. There are now 18 sites in Pennsylvania and the researched-based program is also in 5 other states and Canada. The program is suitable for parents to attend with their child age 10-18.
